Movie Log: Day 12 The Weekend Review

A great weekend and not only for me but also for the Saints who won their first ever Superbowl in team history. On the movie front we begin with the letter B, like the word "blow" acid house slang for cocaine and the title of a movie that we will be reviewing later on. Today we have a classic DiCaprio double feature from beaches to basketball.

ACID HOUSE PROFILE

MOVIE: The Basketball Diaries
DIRECTOR: Scott Kalvert
YEAR: 1995
DRUGS INVOLVED: Heroin, cocaine, Cannabis and solvents

This is a true story about a group of kids, and more specifically one kid named Jim Carroll who plays basketball for a catholic high school. Jim has it all, he has a winning record on his basketball team, is the number one scoring option, and can goof off with his friends because of his prestige with the team. After Jim is introduced to heroin however he begins having to steal and rob for money and has his athletic skills diminished by his drug habit. The real Jim Carroll ended up writing a book a a whole bunch of poetry so he ended up just fine don't worry.
This movie was pretty damn good, the role of Jim was played by the venerable Leonardo DiCaprio and even Mark Walburg makes a little guest appearance. Like in "Another Day in Paradise" the drug use is in your face and visceral. There is powder needles and all kinds of crazy shit going on in this film. It seemed a wee bit too preachy to be an actual acid house film but I will allow it because of the good acting and the great, heavy, hard hitting storyline that carries the movie from beginning till the end.

ACID HOUSE APPROVED: Roger that
WHEN WAS APPROVAL CONFIRMED: When the guys are inhaling what looks like paint fumes
FAVORITE SCENE: The intro basketball game was pretty well put together in introducing all of the characters
ACID SCORE: A rockin 8 hits out of 10

ACID HOUSE PROFILE

MOVIE: The Beach
DIRECTOR: Danny Boyle
YEAR: 2000
DRUGS INVOLVED: Cannabis, Acid

Based on the novel by Alex Garland movies like this come around only once in a blue moon. In the beginning of this film we meet Richard, we know nothing about him but his name and that he has landed (and most likely has been before) in Bangkok. While staying in his hotel he meets up with Daffy (Robert Carlyle) a very eccentric Scottish man who tells Richard that there is an island and more specifically a beach where all your dreams come true. Richard acquires a map to this mysterious island and decides to take two french tourists with him. After arriving he is torn between island life and the real world.
Like I said this movie was exceptionally well done, you have a young DiCaprio, Danny Boyle, and a great piece of source material driving the ship. The story actually reminds me a little of TV's "Lost" and that happens to be my favorite show ever so that is about as much of a compliment as you can get from me. The visuals were stunning with some classic trippy scenes that you would expect from an acid house film. This is an acid house accepted film 100% and wins the award for most weed in a scene (see above). All in all this film could be downright strange a times but has it where it counts.

ACID HOUSE APPROVED: Yes
WHEN WAS APPROVAL CONFIRMED: During Robert Carlyle's description of the island
FAVORITE SCENE: The video game simulation (see above)
ACID SCORE: A whopping 9 hits out of 10

Until tomorrow kids!!
